Quick Summary

This article breaks down the industry shifts brought by TSMC's mass production launch of its 2nm process node, with key takeaways as follows:

1. AMD has secured the first production allocation of TSMC's 2nm process, ending more than a decade of Apple's monopoly on early access to TSMC's most advanced nodes. AMD will use the 2nm process for its 6th-generation EPYC 9006 server CPUs and next-generation Instinct MI455X AI accelerators, with the accelerator adopting a hybrid design: 2nm for the compute die and 3nm for other modules.

2. This shift is primarily driven by the AI boom reshaping demand for advanced process nodes. In TSMC's Q2 2024 revenue, high-performance computing (HPC) accounted for 66% of total revenue, while smartphones contributed only 22%. AI data centers are willing to pay a premium for the energy efficiency gains delivered by cutting-edge process technology.

3. Looking ahead, NVIDIA is expected to secure the first allocation of TSMC's upcoming 1.6nm A16 process, which is designed specifically for HPC workloads. Apple will remain one of the largest 2nm customers, but it is no longer the pioneer pushing the boundary of advanced process development. Going forward, cutting-edge chips will first serve cloud AI applications before moving to consumer devices.

This article outlines the latest technology and consumer trends in the semiconductor industry, providing key insights for R&D and marketing strategies of technology brands, as summarized below:

1. The core demand driver of the industry has shifted: AI and high-performance computing have become the largest buyers of advanced process nodes. Brands should align their product R&D and marketing planning with AI-related demand to keep pace with industry changes.

2. Brands can adopt proven cost-control design approaches: Following the hybrid process design strategy used by AMD and Intel, brands can use the latest advanced process for core computing modules to guarantee performance, while adopting more mature processes for non-core components such as cache and I/O to cut costs, focusing resources where they matter most.

3. The everyday AI services consumers use, from search to office tools, all rely on advanced cloud chips. When marketing AI-related products, brands can leverage user-perceived benefits tied to cloud computing upgrades to capture demand amid the industry shift.

This article outlines the latest market shifts, opportunities and risks for semiconductor and AI-related sellers, with key takeaways as follows:

1. The core growth market has shifted: Where advanced processes once centered on smartphones, AI servers and high-performance computing are now the core growth areas for advanced semiconductors. Related hardware sellers should allocate more resources to this segment to capture growth dividends.

2. Clear product demand opportunity: AI workloads require not just GPUs, but also CPUs to handle end-to-end scheduling. Higher concurrent agent volumes drive stronger demand for CPUs with high core counts and high bandwidth. Sellers can develop products tailored specifically for AI scenarios.

3. Clear risk warning: Advanced process technology is not the only source of competitive advantage for AI chips. Realizing full performance also depends on high bandwidth memory (HBM), advanced packaging, network interconnect and software stacks. Sellers should not just focus on process parameters when rolling out new products; they need to build out end-to-end capabilities to successfully penetrate the market.

This article provides multiple insights for semiconductor manufacturing fabs, with key takeaways as follows:

1. Production and design requirements have shifted: The AI industry demands far higher chip energy efficiency and density than consumer electronics. TSMC's N2 2nm process reduces power consumption by 25% to 30% at equal performance, translating to massive savings in electricity and space costs for data centers. Fabs should prioritize R&D focused on improving energy efficiency and density to align with market demand.

2. Clear commercial opportunity: AI and high-performance computing have become the largest buyers of advanced processes. TSMC's 2nm process already contributes 3% of its wafer revenue even while still in the production ramp-up phase. Fabs should increase investment in advanced process development for AI chips to meet the robust demand from large AI players.

3. Fabs can adopt the hybrid chiplet design approach for production: Use the latest process for core computing components and mature processes for other modules, then integrate everything via advanced packaging. This model controls production costs while guaranteeing performance, balancing return on investment.

This article outlines industry trends, customer pain points and actionable expansion directions for semiconductor service providers, with key takeaways as follows:
