Quick Summary

This article is a micro-interview by ebrun.com with AI post-purchase service provider Seel, sharing practical insights on AI applications for cross-border DTC brands. Key conclusions and takeaways are as follows:

1. While the industry generally focuses on AI applications in front-end processes such as marketing, product selection and content generation, Seel argues that the biggest undervalued opportunity for AI lies in post-purchase operations. Front-end AI determines customer acquisition efficiency, while back-end AI sets the ceiling for user retention— and retention is the true moat for brands.

2. To avoid "AI for AI's sake" technical self-indulgence, brands should first identify the most labor-intensive, uncertain and user-experience-impacting pain points in their business before deploying AI solutions. The true test of AI value is: would merchants miss the function if it were taken offline? If the answer is yes, it creates real value.

3. AI is a force for technological inclusiveness rather than cutthroat competition. It raises the overall competitive bar of the industry, eliminates capability gaps between players and amplifies gaps in strategic insight. It will not eliminate large swathes of the industry, but rather push value creation to higher-end segments.

This article shares actionable insights on brand building for global cross-border brands in the AI era, with key takeaways for long-term brand operation as follows:

1. Today, competition among cross-border brands has shifted from customer acquisition to user retention. Long-term brand equity is built on repeat purchases and user trust, both of which are closely tied to post-purchase experience. Historically a labor-reliant cost center, post-purchase operations can be transformed by AI into an active growth touchpoint for nurturing customer relationships. Investing in post-purchase AI helps brands build a true sustainable competitive moat.

2. AI democratizes advanced operational capabilities. What used to be only affordable for large brands — full multilingual customer support, cross-platform reputation analysis — is now accessible to small brand teams via AI. Competition has shifted from resource-led to insight-led, creating a window for overtaking for players with long-term brand ambitions.

3. The valuation framework for cross-border brands has evolved: investors now focus on retention quality rather than just GMV size, with greater emphasis on LTV/CAC ratio, repeat purchase and trust-based assets, and structural efficiency gains from AI. Brands need to adjust their operational priorities accordingly.

This article shares AI-era opportunities, risks and operational recommendations for cross-border sellers, with key takeaways as follows:

1. AI has created inclusive opportunities for sellers. Full-funnel operational capabilities that once only large sellers could afford can now be quickly built by small teams with AI. Industry entry barriers have been leveled, and competition has shifted from resource-based to insight-based, giving small and medium-sized sellers a fair chance to compete with large players.

2. Sellers should target the currently overlooked value opportunity of AI, prioritizing AI deployment in post-purchase operations. This transforms historical post-purchase costs into operational touchpoints that drive repeat purchases, raise the ceiling for user retention, and build differentiated competitive advantages.

3. Sellers are warned to avoid the risk of "AI for AI's sake" technical self-indulgence. AI deployment should start with real business pain points rather than following trends. The validation standard is whether shutting down the AI function would hurt business performance — only AI applications that deliver tangible value deserve investment.

4. AI will absorb repetitive, standardized work, freeing up human labor to focus on high-value work that AI cannot replace, such as building user trust, lifting overall operational efficiency.

This article provides key insights for export-oriented factories pursuing digital transformation, brand building and AI deployment, with core takeaways as follows:

1. AI has penetrated all links of cross-border brand operation, bringing new opportunities for factories looking to transition to own-brand business. The biggest undervalued opportunity for AI lies in post-purchase user retention. Factories building direct-to-consumer brands can prioritize post-purchase AI capabilities to quickly improve user experience, accumulate repeat purchases and user trust, and build long-term brand equity.

2. Factories should avoid the pitfall of technical self-indulgence when deploying AI, and not chase the AI trend for its own sake. Instead, they should work backwards: first identify the most labor-intensive, experience-impacting and unstable pain points in their business, then introduce AI to solve these problems, so that AI delivers quantifiable real value.

3. AI has raised the competitive bar across the cross-border industry, eliminated capability gaps between players of different sizes, and amplified gaps in strategic insight. As long as factories identify the right direction for AI application, they can make up for resource gaps, compete fairly with established large brands, and capture new growth space.

This article lays out development directions, client pain points and implementation guidance for the AI-powered cross-border service industry, with core insights as follows:

1. Looking at industry trends, current AI attention and resources are concentrated on front-end customer acquisition, marketing and content generation. Back-end user operations such as post-purchase service remain an underdeveloped value gap. Capable service providers can develop AI solutions centered on post-purchase scenarios, which offer vast market potential.

2. The core pain point for current cross-border brands is that post-purchase operations are highly labor-dependent, hard to standardize, and struggle with cross-timezone response. Long treated as a cost center, it cannot be converted into a driver for brand growth. AI is perfectly positioned to solve this structural pain point, transforming post-purchase from a cost center to an active growth touchpoint for user engagement.

3. Service providers developing AI solutions should avoid technical self-indulgence, and not build solutions just to capitalize on the AI trend. Instead, they should align with clients' real business pain points, launch AI solutions starting from clients' most intractable problems, and deliver quantifiable real value. Only solutions of this kind can win client recognition and have long-term viability.

This article outlines the real demands of cross-border sellers for AI applications, offering key references for platforms to improve their ecosystem, optimize recruitment and operation, and mitigate industry risks. Core insights are as follows:

1. Currently, cross-border sellers' demand for AI has expanded from front-end customer acquisition to full-funnel back-end operations, especially with a large amount of unmet demand for AI-driven cost reduction and efficiency improvement in post-purchase links. Platforms can align with sellers' full-funnel operational demands, onboard vertical AI post-purchase service providers like Seel to improve ecosystem completeness, boost service capabilities for sellers, and attract more merchants to onboard.

2. Many sellers currently hold cognitive misconceptions about AI application and easily fall into "AI for AI's sake" technical self-indulgence. Platforms can release relevant guidance content and training to help sellers identify the right AI application scenarios, deploy AI based on their own business pain points, unlock real value from AI, and lift the overall operational efficiency of platform merchants.

3. In the AI era, merchant competition has shifted from scale competition to competition around user retention and long-term operational capability. Platforms can adjust their recruitment and support priorities to focus on attracting high-quality merchants that prioritize long-term brand building and AI-driven efficiency improvement, optimize the merchant structure on the platform, and mitigate volatility risks from short-term traffic-focused merchants.

This article presents the latest trends and first-hand insights of the cross-border e-commerce industry in the AI era, offering high reference value for industry research. Core content is as follows:

1. A new trend of AI application is emerging in the industry: AI deployment is gradually extending from front-end customer acquisition to back-end post-purchase and user retention links. The once-overlooked post-purchase sector is being reworked by AI into a new growth touchpoint for brands. In industry认知, the value gap for AI has shifted from front-end operations to back-end retention, opening up new directions for business model exploration.

2. The industry's competitive landscape is seeing new changes: AI has enabled technological inclusiveness, lowered industry entry barriers, and allowed small teams to access operational capabilities that only large corporations could once afford. It has raised the overall competitive bar of the industry, and shifted competitive logic from resource competition to insight competition — this is an entirely new competitive characteristic.

3. New changes have emerged in industrial value distribution and evaluation frameworks: repetitive standardized work will be absorbed by AI, and human labor will shift to higher-value segments such as user operation and creative judgment. At the same time, the valuation framework for cross-border brands has shifted from focusing solely on GMV scale to prioritizing retention quality and user trust assets. All these are new industry propositions worthy of in-depth research.

Seel:

Seel
