Quick Summary

This article introduces L'Oréal, a beauty company that has participated in the China International Carbon Neutrality Expo for four consecutive years, and its end-to-end practices to cut carbon emissions and advance green consumption, outlining clear, actionable ways for everyday consumers to take part in environmental protection.

1. Consumers can currently join L'Oréal's green initiatives through multiple channels. At offline counters for brands including Lancôme and HR, consumers can participate in empty packaging recycling and choose to prioritize purchasing refillable beauty products. Online, customers on JD.com can earn points by opting out of gift packaging, and join "Core Forest", a collaborative initiative between L'Oréal and Ant Forest, where purchasing refills earns green energy that can be redeemed to plant real trees.

2. L'Oréal has built a mature empty packaging recycling system, with a smart recycling network covering 38 cities across China. To date, 660,000 people have participated, and 440 tons of empty packaging have been recycled. Recycled materials are reused to make public facilities, and unsellable products are sorted for secondary use to avoid resource waste.

3. Green consumption still has significant room for growth: 81% of Chinese women are aware of beauty product refills, but only 52% are willing to purchase them. Everyday consumers can start with small, low-threshold steps to participate in environmental protection, such as choosing refills and joining empty packaging recycling programs.

As a leading beauty brand, L'Oréal's end-to-end green transformation provides a actionable reference sample for sustainable development across the product, marketing and supply chain dimensions for beauty brands.

1. In terms of consumer trends: While consumers generally认同 sustainable values, there is a clear "intention-action gap" shifting mindsets toward green consumption is a long-term project. Brands can use professional events such as the Carbon Neutrality Expo for engaging educational outreach, and leverage offline stores for daily promotion to gradually drive widespread awareness through a ripple effect.

2. In terms of product R&D: It pays to build green packaging strategy early. L'Oréal introduced its 3R principle for eco-friendly packaging back in 2007 — reduce packaging size, replace with renewable materials, and design for recyclability — while aggressively promoting refillable products. The brand also partners with third parties to publish consumer insight reports to align its strategy with market demand.

3. In terms of marketing and supply chain: Brands can partner with online platforms to build incentive mechanisms that lower the barrier to consumer participation, and embed carbon reduction requirements across the full upstream and downstream supply chain, driving suppliers to collaborate on technical innovation to build a shared green supply chain, and turn sustainability into core competitive advantage.

Green consumption has become a clear growth trajectory for the beauty industry, and L'Oréal's practices offer clear opportunity signals and actionable operational takeaways for beauty sellers.

1. Shifting consumer demand: Awareness of sustainable beauty is rising rapidly among Chinese consumers. 81% of Chinese women know about beauty product refills, and 52% are willing to buy them, meaning green products have moved from concept to actual market demand. Refills and recyclable packaging are a clear new growth track.

2. Actionable operational lessons: Sellers can use offline stores as touchpoints for green promotion and empty packaging recycling, and partner with existing online platforms to build incentive mechanisms — for example, JD.com's points program for opting out of gift packaging, or Ant Group's model that converts green consumption into Ant Forest green energy. Gamification lowers consumer participation barriers and boosts conversion.

3. Opportunity and risk notes: Nearly half of consumers still lack awareness or adoption habits for refills, leaving huge room for market education, so early positioning allows brands to capture consumer mindshare. A mature smart empty packaging recycling network already covers 38 cities, so sellers can partner directly with this network instead of building infrastructure from scratch. Sustainability is a long-term strategy, and only genuine on-the-ground implementation can build consumer trust and become core enduring value.

L'Oréal's end-to-end carbon reduction strategy sets out clear product design directions for upstream and downstream beauty manufacturing factories, unlocks new business opportunities, and provides a reference path for factories' green transformation.

1. Product manufacturing and design requirements: L'Oréal sets clear green standards for packaging materials and production processes. Packaging must comply with the 3R principle and support refill design, factories need to develop food-contact-grade recycled materials, and suppliers are required to build a full-chain carbon emission tracing system. Carbon reduction goals must be implemented through data-driven, systematic processes, which clarifies R&D and upgrade directions for factories.

2. Business opportunities: Leading brands have embedded green requirements across their entire supply chains. Factories with capabilities in green material R&D and energy-efficient production will become core partners for top brands, and are even eligible for L'Oréal's "Partner for Tomorrow" award, which opens up further industry collaboration opportunities.

3. Transformation reference: Qiaxing, a veteran beauty packaging manufacturer, completed systematic energy efficiency retrofits for more than 500 legacy machines, rolling out the change from pilot to full workshop. The payback period for the investment was less than two years, and after full completion, the project is expected to cut annual electricity use by 10.4 million kWh, reducing carbon emissions by nearly 5,900 tons. This model delivers both cost reduction and carbon reduction goals, making it a strong reference for traditional factories.

End-to-end green transformation has become a clear industry trend in the beauty sector, and service providers can identify core client pain points and unlock new business growth from L'Oréal's practices.

1. Industry trends: Sustainability has become a core strategic priority for leading beauty brands, with carbon reduction demand spanning the full value chain: front-end consumer outreach, mid-stream production and supply chain, and back-end recycling treatment. The green service market holds massive potential, and service providers with technical and resource integration capabilities will capture significant opportunities.

2. Core client pain points: Brands currently face three core challenges. First, it is difficult to drive consumer adoption of green behaviors, as most consumers "know but don't act" on sustainability. Second, the supply chain lacks mature solutions for green materials and energy efficiency retrofitting. Third, connecting the last mile of empty packaging recycling requires a mature network that most brands do not have.

3. Reference solutions: For end consumers, service providers can partner with brands and internet platforms to build quantifiable incentive mechanisms, using perceptible, gamified models to lower participation barriers — such as Ant Forest's green energy system. For business clients, service providers can lead collaborative green technology R&D, support traditional factories in energy efficiency retrofitting, and build smart empty recycling networks to meet brands' end-to-end carbon reduction requirements.

L'Oréal's green transformation demonstrates leading brands' demand for platform-provided green services, and provides clear guidance for platforms looking to build out green ecosystems and optimize operations.

1. Core brand demands from platforms: Brands need platforms to provide quantifiable green behavior tracking tools and mature user incentive systems, to help deliver green consumption education, close the full loop from consumer purchase to ecological impact, and resolve the gap between consumer awareness and action.

2. Reference best practices: JD.com launched an incentive program that rewards points for opting out of gift packaging, to guide consumers toward choosing sustainable packaging. Ant Group partnered with brands to build a green product certification system that labels compliant products with sustainability tags, and launched the "Core Forest" initiative that converts green consumption into green energy and real tree planting rewards. This gamified design drastically lowers participation barriers, and already draws around 30 million participants, delivering strong results.

3. Operational and risk notes: Platforms can build green certification systems to help brands communicate their value and make it easier for consumers to identify sustainable options. They can also partner with brands on ecological restoration projects to make green impact visible and boost user engagement. Green consumption is a long-term project that requires sustained investment rather than short-term marketing stunts to build genuine user trust.

L'Oréal's four consecutive years of end-to-end green practices showcased at the Carbon Neutrality Expo reveal the latest trends in sustainable development for the beauty industry, and provides a complete, on-the-ground case study for industrial research.

1. New industry trends: The beauty industry's green transformation has evolved from single-link emission cuts to coordinated transformation across the entire industrial chain; it has expanded from leading brands cutting their own emissions to driving upstream and downstream suppliers to upgrade together; and it has extended from B-end strategic implementation to cultivating C-end consumer habits, forming a complete closed loop from production to consumption, recycling and ecological impact.

2. New industry challenges: The entire industry faces a widespread sustainability "intention-action gap": some brands only market sustainability without implementing tangible changes, while consumers认同 the idea but are unwilling to change their behavior. Lowering the barrier to participation across all links of the green transformation remains the core challenge for the industry to solve.

3. Innovative business models and insights: L'Oréal has developed a cross-sector collaborative sustainable business model that brings together brands, supply chains, and internet platforms. It transforms sustainable consumption from an abstract moral narrative into an accessible, incentivized, quantifiable behavior embedded in consumers' daily routines, delivering shared value for brands, consumers and the environment. This research also confirms that sustainability is not an extra cost for businesses, but a core enduring asset that helps companies weather economic cycles, and that beautiful business growth and sustainable development are not a zero-sum game.
