Quick Summary

This article organizes key takeaways from the 2026 World Retail Congress, summarizes the latest global retail development trends, and shares actionable insights for general readers, particularly Chinese retail practitioners.

1. Global retail industry has formally taken Chinese cross-border platforms including Temu, Shein, and TikTok Shop as core research subjects. These platforms are more than just low-price players; their core advantage is a new retail operating system that enables end-to-end rapid response, which is well worth learning from for industry practitioners.

2. The retail industry has moved past the era of scaling up by chasing market bubbles, and has entered an age where core capabilities are the key to competition. Future retail competition will not only be about products, but also about content production capabilities, which are required to generate purchase desire and shareable selling points.

3. AI is no longer just an office productivity tool; it has become a new gateway for product discovery and sales guidance. Practitioners need to organize clear, consistent brand and product information adapted for AI. They also need to compress decision-making chains and reduce decision delay costs. Low price is only a ticket to enter the market; efficiency and trust are the core of user retention.

This article summarizes current retail industry development trends based on core topics from the 2026 World Retail Congress, and provides actionable insights for brands.

1. On consumer trends: Today’s consumers are more rational and cautious in spending, and value-driven retail with high cost-performance will become the mainstream of future growth. Low price is only an entry ticket to the market; efficiency and consumer trust are the core of user retention. Brands need to cut excessive premiums that consumers are unwilling to pay for.

2. On distribution channels: AI has become a new gateway for consumer discovery and sales guidance. In addition to managing consumer brand perception, brands need to organize clear and consistent product and brand information to ensure AI can correctly understand and recommend their products.

3. On product development and marketing: Brands can learn from the rapid response system of Chinese cross-border platforms, quickly translate consumer feedback into product adjustments and shorten development cycles. They also need to build in-house content production capabilities to generate consumer desire, instead of relying solely on shelf-based sales.

Starting from the core topics of the 2026 World Retail Congress, this article sorts out new changes, opportunities, risks, and actionable lessons for retail sellers.

1. On demand shifts and opportunities: Consumers are more rational, bringing growth opportunities for value-driven high cost-performance retail. Brick-and-mortar stores still have room to grow as long as they offer experiences that cannot be replicated online. The "product discovers consumer" model driven by content to generate purchase desire has become the mainstream direction of retail.

2. On risk warnings: The era of chasing hype, scaling up without focusing on profitability is over. Sellers that only compete on price, respond slowly to market changes, lack content capabilities, or only stock products without user operation will be eliminated by the market.

3. On key takeaways: Sellers can learn from the fast operation system of Chinese cross-border platforms to shorten the entire end-to-end process from demand feedback to product adjustment and supply chain response, and grant more on-site decision-making power to frontline employees. They can also leverage AI to improve short-video content production efficiency and drive business growth through AI-generated content.

Based on discussions at this top global retail conference, this article outlines insights for factories on product demand, business opportunities, and digital transformation.

1. On product design and production requirements: The retail industry now demands faster market response than ever before, and decision delay cost has become a common industry pain point. Traditional long-cycle production models no longer meet the requirements of new retail. Factories need to cooperate with retail ends to shorten product development and adjustment cycles to respond faster to changing market demand.

2. On business opportunities: The growth of value-driven retail makes consumers more reluctant to pay excessive premiums, so the direct factory supply model is increasingly favored by the market, giving factories more opportunities to connect directly with brands and retail platforms. Meanwhile, Chinese cross-border platforms have entered the stage of localized operation, with local procurement accounting for 70% to 80% in the European market. The localized layout of these platforms has also brought new growth opportunities for relevant factories.

3. On digital transformation insights: Factories need to build a rapid data feedback mechanism, to quickly transmit sales data and user feedback from the retail end back to production, so as to adjust product design and production plans to adapt to the new data-driven retail assortment system.

This article sorts out the latest development trends of the global retail industry, summarizes common industry pain points, and provides actionable insights for service providers serving the retail sector.

1. On industry development trends: Global retail has entered a new stage of competition focused on core operational capabilities, end-to-end response speed, AI adaptation, and content production capabilities. Chinese cross-border platforms have become a new variable reshaping global retail rules, and the entire industry’s competitive standards are being restructured.

2. On core client pain points: Many retail companies have already adopted AI and big data tools, but their long organizational decision-making processes mean it takes 4 to 12 weeks to implement adjustments after demand changes, generating high decision delay costs and causing missed market opportunities. Many brick-and-mortar stores do not know how to transform to leverage their inherent advantages, and a large number of brands still do not know how to adapt to the industry shift where AI has become a new sales gateway.

3. On solution directions: Service providers can develop products focused on shortening retail clients’ decision chains and improving organizational response speed; help brick-and-mortar stores build experiential advantages and content dissemination capabilities; and help brands organize standardized product and brand information to meet the requirements of AI-powered search and recommendation.

Based on discussions at the 2026 World Retail Congress, this article sorts out merchants’ new demands for platforms, summarizes the latest practices of leading cross-border platforms, and provides reference for all types of retail platforms.

1. On merchants’ new demands: The biggest pain point for merchants today is slow organizational decision-making and market response. Platforms need to optimize rules to help merchants shorten the end-to-end process from demand data to product adjustment, and support merchants to respond faster to market changes.

2. On the latest practices of leading platforms: Leading Chinese cross-border platforms including Temu, Shein, and TikTok Shop have entered a new stage of localized operation. They increase the proportion of local procurement by recruiting local brands, designers and sellers to shorten the market response chain, while using AI to produce content in bulk to generate purchase desire. This model has become a research sample for the global retail industry.

3. On risk mitigation and development directions: Platforms should not only attract merchants through price wars and chasing GMV growth; they need to help merchants achieve healthy profitability and build an ecosystem based on efficiency and trust. They should also recognize the value of AI, integrate AI into the product discovery path, help merchants adapt to the new rules of AI-guided sales, and build a platform ecosystem featuring end-to-end rapid response.

This paper documents the core topics of the 2026 World Retail Congress, presents the latest developments of the global retail industry, and provides clear directional reference for retail industry researchers.

1. On new industry developments: The global retail industry has extended its strategic planning to 2030. Chinese retail has transformed from a former innovation role model to a new competitive variable that global players must contend with. Chinese cross-border platforms represented by Temu, Shein, and TikTok Shop have brought a completely new retail operating system, which is restructuring the global retail industry’s standards for speed, pricing, and content conversion.

2. On new industry challenges: After AI entered the consumer product discovery path, the power to interpret brands has shifted, and traditional brand perception management models are facing new challenges. Decision delay cost has become the core bottleneck for retail enterprises to improve efficiency. Low-price competition has become a basic industry configuration, so the healthy growth model for value-driven retail needs to be redefined. Reconstructing the value of physical stores and transforming the role of frontline employees are also new problems the industry needs to solve.

3. On observation of new business models: The end-to-end rapid response operation model of Chinese cross-border platforms, and the content-driven retail model that uses AI to generate content and create consumer desire, both carry high research value. The underlying industry competitive logic has shifted from product competition to competition based on content capability and organizational efficiency.

2026年大会于4月27日至29日在德国柏林InterContinental(洲际酒店)举行,主题是:Retail’s Roadmap to 2030:Winning Customers Today.

2026年的议程中,可以看到Estée Lauder(雅诗兰黛)、IKEA(宜家)母公司Ingka Group、Deloitte(德勤)、Uniqlo(优衣库)、Sephora(丝芙兰)、H&M、物美等企业或机构高管参与。

China’s New Global Commerce Playbook:Temu,Shein&TikTok's Strategies to Redefining Retail Amid Political and Consumer Shifts,大意是:中国出海平台的新全球商业剧本:Temu、Shein与TikTok如何在消费变化中重塑零售。

◎如何把消费者反馈变成商品动作;

◎如何把内容热点变成销售转化;

◎如何把销售数据快速传回供应链;

World Retail Congress与合作机构发布的《The Retail CXO Outlook Roadmap to 2030》中提到:AI正在消费者抵达品牌门店之前,就已经介入发现路径。

Value Retailing

The Art of Shopkeeping in the Digital Age,也就是数字时代的店铺经营艺术。
