1. Downstream trend shifts: The AI chip market is growing rapidly, with its global market size projected to reach 958 billion yuan by 2026, and a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.8% from 2026 to 2032. However, demand for traditional consumer electronics remains sluggish: global smartphone shipments are projected to drop 12.4% year-over-year by 2026, hitting the lowest level since 2013. While demand for automotive electronics and IoT chips is growing, pricing remains depressed.

2. Industry competitive landscape: Leading OSAT firms have already secured positions and locked in partnerships with core large AI chip customers. Tongfu Microelectronics is partnered with AMD, while JCET handles orders from NVIDIA, giving these players clear competitive advantages. The technical and customer barriers for mid-sized and small OSAT firms to enter AI packaging and testing are high.

3. Notes on partnership selection: Packaging prices have continued to decline in recent years, pulling down overall industry gross margins. Small and mid-sized OSAT firms generally face cost pressure from high depreciation and high interest expenses. Chip brands need to assess the financial stability and capacity reliability of potential packaging partners.

This article sorts out the competitive landscape and operating status of the AI chip packaging and testing track, with key takeaways for chip-related sellers as follows:

1. Market opportunities: AI chip packaging and testing is a clear high-growth track. The global AI chip market is expanding rapidly, and high-performance chips such as AI and HPC have strong demand for advanced packaging, creating substantial market space. Relevant sellers can explore opportunities along the AI chip industrial chain.

2. Risk warnings: Layout of advanced AI packaging is a capital-intensive endeavor that requires large upfront investment, comes with high technical barriers, and has a long customer validation cycle that makes near-term profitability hard to achieve, often leading to consecutive years of losses. Under pressure from leading players, it is extremely difficult for small and mid-sized vendors to secure orders from core large customers.

3. Lessons learned: Companies entering this new track can actively leverage government subsidies and public listing financing to ease financial pressure. Companies looking to enter AI packaging need to secure market positions early to avoid falling behind competitors, and must carry out careful financial planning to control debt scale and avoid short-term liquidity crises.

This article outlines the current development and demand shifts in the advanced packaging industry, with key insights for chip packaging and related manufacturing factories as follows:

1. Production and demand changes: Demand for advanced packaging technologies such as 2.5D/3D for AI chips is growing rapidly, while packaging demand in traditional consumer electronics continues to decline. Although packaging demand for automotive electronics and IoT is growing, persistent overcapacity from earlier expansion has kept prices depressed. Factories need to adjust their capacity structure in a timely manner and shift capacity toward AI-related advanced packaging.

2. Business opportunities: The global AI chip market maintains a CAGR of over 18%, driving continuous growth in demand for advanced packaging. Factories that complete technical validation and deploy capacity early are more likely to secure orders from downstream AI chip customers and capture industry growth dividends.

3. Expansion takeaways: Advanced packaging is a capital-intensive industry. Companies need to control debt scale reasonably during expansion to avoid the high debt-to-asset ratio and short-term liquidity pressure that Yunsil Electronics faces from over-borrowing. They also need to push forward customer validation early to shorten the cycle from production line launch to mass production, and reduce profit erosion.

This article sorts out the latest developments in China's advanced packaging industry, with key insights for semiconductor-related service providers as follows:

1. Industry development trends: The AI chip boom has driven rapid expansion of the entire advanced packaging track. More and more traditional packaging and testing firms are investing in capacity for advanced packaging such as 2.5D/3D, driving the industry's overall shift to high-end products. Traditional low- and mid-end packaging capacity is facing oversupply and continuous price declines, creating strong demand for industry upgrading.

2. Core customer pain points: Companies currently expanding into advanced packaging generally face two core pain points. First, large funding gaps: capital-intensive capacity expansion requires large amounts of long-term capital, and most companies have substantial financing needs, with some even facing short-term liquidity stress. Second, long technical validation cycles: advanced packaging processes such as 2.5D are complex, and customer validation takes a long time, delaying commercial mass production.

3. Business opportunities: Service providers can develop targeted solutions to address these needs. For example, they can develop customized financing services for capital-intensive advanced packaging projects to meet OSAT firms' financing needs, or provide technical consulting services related to validation to help companies shorten validation cycles and reduce expansion risks.

This article outlines the various challenges that listed OSAT firms face when expanding advanced capacity, with key insights for semiconductor industry platforms and capital market platforms as follows:

1. Core corporate demands for platforms: OSAT firms expanding advanced packaging capacity have strong demand for large amounts of long-term, low-cost financing. Beyond equity financing and convertible bonds, they need platforms to connect them with more diversified financing resources. Some firms also lack customer access, and need platforms to help connect them with downstream AI chip customers to speed up validation.

2. Risks to monitor: A large number of small and mid-sized OSAT firms are currently rushing to lay out capacity for AI advanced packaging, which may lead to overcapacity and intensified competition in the future. Some firms are expanding through excessive borrowing, which raises the risk of debt default. Platforms need to carry out early risk warning and management.

3. Directions for platform optimization: Platforms can launch targeted financing matchmaking services for high-quality companies in the advanced packaging track to help them reduce financing costs. They can also build upstream-downstream matchmaking platforms to connect OSAT firms with AI chip customers, speed up capacity launch, and promote healthy and orderly industry development.

This article outlines the latest competitive shifts in China's packaging and testing industry amid the AI boom, providing rich first-hand industrial information for industry researchers. Key insights are as follows:

1. New industry trends: The AI chip boom has spurred a wave of advanced packaging capacity expansion. Leading OSAT firms have already secured early positions and achieved rapid revenue growth by partnering with top global AI chip customers. Second-tier OSAT players have also increased investment to layout 2.5D/3D advanced packaging, in an attempt to enter the AI packaging track, and a layered competitive landscape is gradually taking shape.

2. New emerging industry problems: Second-tier OSAT firms entering AI packaging face three layers of pressure. First, financial pressure: capital-intensive investment pushes up interest-bearing debt, and interest and depreciation continuously erode profits, forcing most firms to rely on government subsidies to maintain positive earnings while posting consecutive non-GAAP net losses. Second, long technical validation cycles that delay mass production and revenue generation in the near term. Third, competitive pressure: leading players have already locked in core customer resources, making it very difficult for second-tier players to break out.

3. Promising future research directions: Researchers can further explore topics including the feasibility of second-tier OSAT firms entering the high-end AI packaging track, reasonable debt ranges for expansion in capital-intensive semiconductor industries, and the impact of government subsidies on the development of growth-stage semiconductor companies.
