Quick Summary

This article traces the rise and fall of Kurhn Doll, the iconic domestic toy brand once hailed as "China’s Barbie," offering both a nostalgic look at a childhood-favorite brand and practical reference for doll and designer toy consumers.

1. Current status of the brand: In 2026, the two core operating entities under Kurhn have been subject to enforced judgments totaling more than RMB 18 million, with its legal representative placed on the high-consumption restriction list. Its factory has been locked by the property owner over unpaid rent, and the brand is currently clearing inventory at steep discounts: classic dolls originally priced at hundreds or even thousands of RMB are being sold for as low as RMB 25–90. The brand has not fully ceased operations, however: it is preparing to reissue its classic "Hello Doggy" collection launched 20 years ago, and its original doll clothing production line has been spun off into a new company that provides contract manufacturing for designer toy brands.

The article also offers clear guidance for everyday consumers.

1. Kurhn once accompanied the childhoods of the post-90s and post-00s generations with doll designs aligned with East Asian aesthetics and Chinese cultural elements. Its decline is largely attributed to long-term disconnection from evolving consumer aesthetics, suppression of fan-made derivative works, and loose supply chain management.

2. China’s doll collector market is currently growing rapidly, with a wide range of highly customizable product options. Consumers with relevant interests are advised to select products matching their specific needs rather than clinging to aging legacy brands.

The rise and fall of Kurhn Doll serves as a classic case study for domestic toy brands, offering multidimensional lessons for brand building and operations.

1. Transferable takeaways from its growth phase: Kurhn successfully capitalized on foreign brands’ failure to adapt to local preferences, built an "Eastern maiden" brand identity rooted in domestic aesthetic tastes, and integrated traditional Chinese cultural elements into product design. Through product placement in film and television, IP collaborations, and extensive offline retail distribution, the brand once reached annual sales of over RMB 100 million and captured an 18% market share, cementing its position as an industry leader.

Brand operators must avoid core operational pitfalls while aligning with current consumer trends in the sector.

1. On the product front, brands must keep pace with target users’ evolving aesthetic preferences, ensure core design teams stay attuned to subculture dynamics, and proactively support rather than suppress fan-created derivative content, to avoid eroding loyalty among core user groups.

2. For supply chain and pricing management, brands must strictly control their price systems to prevent a flood of unofficially distributed goods from prematurely eroding brand credibility. Since design uniqueness is the top purchase priority for 60% of doll consumers with clear brand preferences, following the IP-first model exemplified by Ye Luoli (Night Lolita)—building IP through content before rolling out physical products—can more effectively help brands avoid homogenization and unlock larger market opportunities.

Kurhn Doll’s decline not only flags core operational risks for designer toy and general toy sellers, but also highlights practical growth opportunities in the current doll collector market.

1. Non-negotiable operational pitfalls to avoid: Never undermine the organic fan derivative creation ecosystem among core players; never allow product design to remain stagnant and disconnected from user aesthetic shifts; maintain tight control over sourcing and pricing systems to prevent low-priced gray-market goods and prematurely leaked new products from disrupting regular sales and eroding consumer trust in brands.

The doll collector track offers clear growth opportunities, with multiple viable operational entry points.

1. The market as a whole is in a high-growth phase: during the 2026 618 shopping festival, the number of new doll-related products listed online rose more than 160% year-over-year, overall transaction value notched double-digit growth, custom category transactions nearly doubled year-over-year, the BJD (ball-jointed doll) segment has recorded a 12.5% CAGR over the past five years, and domestic brands now hold a 63% market share.

2. On the demand side, nearly 30% of consumers rank design uniqueness as their top purchase criterion. Sellers can expand offerings around niche custom demands such as doll modification, custom doll clothing, and wigs of different materials. They may also source legitimate inventory from legacy brands running low-price clearance sales for traffic-driving purposes, as long as they properly verify the compliance of supply sources.

The production-side transformation path of Kurhn Doll, coupled with current production demand in the doll collector market, can provide business direction guidance and risk warnings for toy manufacturing factories.

1. Transformation reference when proprietary brands face setbacks: When own-brand operations become unsustainable, factories can leverage their mature production capabilities to enter contract manufacturing segments in high-growth niche tracks. For example, Kurhn repurposed its original doll clothing production line by registering a new entity to take on outsourcing orders for emerging designer toy and BJD brands, including doll clothing production, doll head rooting, and hair wefting, while also quickly recovering cash flow through compliant inventory clearance.

Factories should prioritize current production demands in the doll collector track, while learning lessons related to supply chain management and digital upgrades.

1. On the production and design side, align output with Gen Z aesthetic preferences; avoid allowing design teams to become disconnected from subculture consumer insights, and do not replace professional doll design roles with designers from non-specialized fields. Factories can allocate production capacity around niche doll segment demands, such as doll clothing in different sizes, doll wigs of varied materials, and base doll bodies and heads, to fulfill contract manufacturing demand from fast-growing emerging designer toy brands.

2. For supply chain control, adopt digital tools to manage full-link distribution, preventing leaked pre-launch gray-market goods from disrupting pricing systems and harming partner clients’ interests.

The rapid growth of the doll collector market, alongside operational pain points exposed by both new and legacy brands, can help service providers clarify industry trends and business expansion directions.

1. In terms of industry development trends, China’s domestic doll collector market is expanding rapidly: the domestic BJD market reached approximately RMB 20 billion in 2025, accounting for 26% of the global market, with a 12.5% CAGR over the past five years, and domestic brands holding a 63% market share. The sector’s industry chain is highly segmented, fan derivative ecosystems are mature, and user demand for customized services is strong—custom category transactions nearly doubled year-over-year during the 2026 618 shopping festival.

Clear unmet service demands exist across different types of industry players, for which targeted solutions can be developed.

1. Legacy toy brands commonly face pain points including design disconnected from user aesthetics, loose supply chain control, mismanagement of fan derivative ecosystems, and weak IP operation capabilities. Service providers can offer services such as user aesthetic research, digital supply chain management, subculture user operation, and IP content development for these clients.

2. Emerging brands and small-to-medium merchants primarily face pain points around niche product development, customized supply chain matching, and subculture marketing. Service providers can connect them with specialized production resources, offer subculture content marketing plans, and help brands build healthy creator cooperation mechanisms.

The growth momentum of the doll collector track and the industry problems exposed by Kurhn’s rise and fall offer practical reference for platforms to optimize category operation, clarify merchant recruitment priorities, and strengthen risk prevention and control.

1. Clear merchant recruitment opportunities exist in the track: during the 2026 618 shopping festival, the number of new online products in the doll category increased by over 160% year-over-year, total transaction value achieved double-digit growth, and custom category transactions nearly doubled year-over-year. Platforms can prioritize designer toy and doll categories for recruitment, focusing on bringing in emerging BJD and designer toy brands with original design capabilities, as well as niche category merchants offering doll clothing, wigs, and doll modification services, to build a complete full-chain category supply.

Platforms should focus on core priorities in operational management and risk avoidance.

1. On the operation side, proactively build subculture content ecosystems, encourage players, doll modifiers and other creators to post derivative content, and guide brands to establish reasonable creator cooperation mechanisms, to prevent brands’ unjustified suppression of fan works from undermining subculture vitality.

2. On the risk prevention and control side, enforce price order management, crack down on the circulation of pre-launch gray-market goods and pirated products to avoid bad-faith actors driving out legitimate businesses. Platforms can also roll out targeted support measures for struggling classic domestic legacy brands, helping them reissue classic products, liquidate inventory, and connect with relevant resources.

The rise and fall of Kurhn Doll and the explosive growth of China’s domestic doll collector track represent a valuable research sample for observing the development of domestic consumer brands and the evolution of the designer toy industry.

1. In terms of new industry trends, China’s domestic doll industry has entered a high-growth phase with a highly segmented industrial chain. The BJD market reached approximately RMB 20 billion in 2025, accounting for 26% of the global market, with domestic brands holding a 63% market share. Consumer preferences have shifted from solely purchasing finished products to personalized customization; nearly 30% of consumers rank design uniqueness as their top purchase consideration, and fan derivative ecosystems have become a core factor determining a brand’s long-term viability. Some declining legacy brands have begun to pivot to contract manufacturing based on existing production capacity, taking on new roles in the industrial division of labor.

New problems emerging in the industry’s development and its diverse business models hold high research value.

1. Legacy domestic toy brands generally face issues including lagging design iteration, mismanagement of core user circles, loose supply chain control, and insufficient IP operation capabilities. Some brands have accelerated their own decline by charging unreasonable fees to suppress user-created derivative content.

2. Three typical business models warrant focused comparative research: the traditional toy production and sales model represented by Kurhn, the content-first IP model that drives peripheral product development represented by Ye Luoli, and the model adopted by emerging designer toy brands that uses low-barrier blind boxes as an entry point paired with deep original IP cultivation. Research can summarize the applicable conditions and risk points of each model.
